F1 2021 on PS4 Review – Is It Worth Buying?

In this review, we are going to be checking out F1 2021 on PS4 and see whether or not it is worth buying. For starters, F1 2021 is the latest installment in the F1 game series that features a wide spread of game modes and features that will really provide for an immersive Formula 1 experience for players of all levels.

It is also a racing simulation game that is developed by Codemasters and Electronic Arts ( EA ) which was released back in July 2021.

Even though this seems to be a late review, I’m only providing this review based on my impressions and for those who wish to know what the game has to offer.

So without further ado, let’s get to it!

The Gameplay

Got to start with the obvious, and that’s the gameplay. The minute that I first played F1 2021 for the first time felt like an overwhelming experience. Right from the main menu, there were a variety of game modes and features throughout the game that really grabbed my attention including one particular story mode called Braking Point.

The minute I hopped into my first race in the game felt very realistic. The controls were a bit confusing at first, that took a bit of a time to getting used to, and the camera angle of driving the latest model Formula 1 race cars felt very immersive. The realism of driving Formula 1 race cars in the game was no joke at all, as it took me several races to FINALLY master racing these high-powered speedy machines.

Moreover, managing pit stops in between races was also a bit confusing at first, but then became an easy thing to do as the game clearly displayed two command buttons at the lower right of the screen. One of these buttons were the L1 button ( headset icon ) for making calls for a pitstop while the other was the circle button ( three horizontal lines ) for making adjustments for a pitstop.

Managing both of these commands while driving surely wasn’t easy, but overtime became a commonly quick and easy to use for managing pit stops right on the go.

Customization

Next up was noticing that there were a wide selection of customization options available for both driver avatar and for the Formula 1 race car. Starting with the driver avatar, there were quite a few choices available for changing the overall look of my driver’s avatar.

First, there was having the option to change both helmets and suits for my driver avatar, if I were to get bored with the default look.

Next was selecting the face for my driver avatar from a diverse range of genders and nationalities that made it rather useful for creating an ideal driver avatar that can sort of at least resemble. It’s great to know that F1 2021 has diverse facial customization options available for players to choose from for creating ideal driver avatars of their own to see walking the podium after a race.

There were also options for choosing a emote ( victory animation ) and pose ( avatar stance ) which was fun seeing all the movements and stances that my created driver avatar could make.

As for car customization, there weren’t many options for building the ideal look of my Formula 1 race car which was a bit disappointing. The only options that I could change for customizing the F1 race car was liveries, decals, colors, and stickers.

Even though there wasn’t much to customizing F1 race cars in F1 2021 is still nice to the option for building out an ideal Formula 1 race car of your own from scratch.

All New “Braking Point” Story Mode

One of the most interesting features that I really enjoyed playing in F1 2021 was the all-new story mode called Braking Point. This story mode was no doubt in my mind the most fun and entertaining mode that I ever played in any F1 game in my entire life. The story is about 2 teammates ( Casper Akkerman ) and ( Aiden Jackson ) who both don’t see eye to eye in working well together throughout an entire Formula 1 season.

The story shows a sequence of cut scenes between mid and post races where both teammates give each other a hard time both on and off the track. The presentation on how well the game captured the intensity of both teammates clashing with one another reminds me of Silvester Stallone’s 2001 movie Driven.

There were some similarities between both the game and the movie that shows intense cutscenes that gave a bit of an adrenaline rush.

Moreover, playing the entire story felt like watching a movie that showed passion and for what life’s like being a professional Formula 1 driver both on and off the track.

Driver / My Team Career Mode

My Team Career customization

The next feature of F1 2021 is all about stepping into the role of being a Formula 1 driver and team owner at the same time. My Team Career mode presents a unique and overwhelming experience of creating your own Formula 1 racing team and driver that sets you apart from the rest of the Formula 1 racing world.

From the beginning of starting your own F1 racing team, the game starts off with a cut scene of British Formula 1 media presenter Will Buxton introducing the racing world to a newly created F1 racing team. He then interviews the player about what to expect of running their newly formed F1 team both as a driver and owner.

Moreover, the game continues on with tutorials that explain in detail the fundamentals of running every aspect of managing Formula 1 team.

Furthermore, as both a driver and team owner you get to create your driver, add in a teammate, create a logo, etc as you are building out your own Formula 1 racing organization from the ground up.

My Team career mode really bring in the unique experience of stepping in the shoes of being both a Formula 1 team owner and driver that offers quite the journey of creating your own everlasting racing legacy.

  1. Wow, When the PS5 hit the market a couple of years ago, I figured that the PS4 would be on its way out, but since we still haven’t personally been able to find a PS5, I am so happy to find new PS4 game reviews! The F1 2021 game looks great even if there is a small issue with a lack of car customization. I think it’s okay that beginners find the driving to be tricky, as more serious gamers (like the person the game is for), will appreciate that it takes a bit of skill to master the game. Thanks for sharing this review of a fun-looking PS4 racing game!

    1. Glad you enjoyed it! Yes PS5’s are hard to get since they are sold old so quickly. Thanks for your comment! 🙂

  2. Hi Terence,

I used to play a lot of games on my PS3 but now my lil brother is the one who is always on his PS4. It is his birthday next month and I am thinking to gift him an awesome game for his PS. After reading your article this F1 seems to be a great game. I played Dirt 5 at my friends’ house. Which one would you prefer F1 or Race 5?

    1. Cool! Happy birthday to your brother! I’m sure he will love Formula 1 games as a birthday present. F1 racing games are a great gift for every gamer. Hope he enjoys it!  🙂
