PS4 / Xbox One Reviews

Need For Speed ( 2015 ) Review – Is It Worth The Buy?

In this post we are going to be taking a look at Need for Speed ( 2015 ) which was released in 2015 for PS4, Xbox One and review whether or not it’s worth buying. Since it’s release, Need for Speed ( 2015 ) has received mixed reviews from game critics that had many die-hard fans of the Need for Speed series on edge. It was also of course a reboot to the series in which have players expecting some major changes and improvements to the series going forward.

So without any further ado, let’s see whether or not Need for Speed ( 2015 ) is worth playing on the previous gen consoles of PS4 and Xbox One today.

The Gameplay

Casually cruising around in a slightly upgraded and customized Subaru BRZ

First off, the most important thing that you must know about Need for Speed ( 2015 ) is that it is an “online only” game which means that in order to play the game you must have a constant internet connection. When you hear this type of news involving an upcoming console game when you don’t have reliable internet access it can be downright disappointing, but for those who do have reliable internet access it should be no problem at all.

Furthermore, when I first picked up my digital copy of Need for Speed ( 2015 ) on PS4 I got excited about what next-gen consoles of PS4 and Xbox One has to offer since at the time I could only play older Need for Speed games on my PS3. But now that I have FINALLY got my hands on playing Need for Speed ( 2015 ) I can now provide you with how my experiences went of knowing what the actual gameplay is like, rather than just seeing the gameplay footage on YouTube.

To my surprise when I started my first game session playing Need for Speed ( 2015 ) on my PS4, I was amazed by how realistic the graphics of the cars and the entire environment were.

Moreover, while I was dazzled of how realistic the graphics were thanks to the power of next-gen technology of the PS4, I did, however started the fun by choosing my first car which was the Subaru BRZ. The feel of driving my chosen starter car was a bit mediocre since it was only the stock version at the time, which didn’t make for the best car to drift with.

Along with driving the Subaru BRZ on the nightly streets of Ventura Bay, I did have a bit of fun of messing around with the cops which didn’t last very long since their easy to out run at level 1 heat rating.

As I continued to speed my way through the streets of Ventura Bay I did notice how the rain-slick roads gave off mirror-like reflections of the car I was using, which was really impressive by knowing how far gaming technology has come.

As far as the races go, using a stock version of a non upgraded car was extremely difficult to get up to first place, which also made completing x amount of races just to unlock upgrades a pain.

Good thing the game is loaded with plenty of races all over the map, so there’s plenty of opportunities to earn just enough money needed to buy some SERIOUS upgrades in which made a really a BIG difference in winning more races.

More race wins = more money

More money = more upgrades which then leads to domination.

Cars and Customization

Customizing a blue Subaru BRZ in the garage

When it comes to Need for Speed ( 2015 ) there are only two things that matter, the cars and of course, customization in which has really made playing Need for Speed ( 2015 ) well worth it. The Need for Speed series is all about the car culture with it’s unique experience of providing players the fun of customizing the cars of their dreams that suit their personality.

Throughout the years of playing Need for Speed games car customization has and always will be the utmost desired feature that players and fans of the series want, ever since the golden era of Underground and Most Wanted.

In Need for Speed ( 2015 ) there are a variety of cars available from muscles, tuners, to the exotics that can be unlocked by spending an ENORMOUS amount of in-game money in which will take a lot of time to rack up. Once you have farmed up enough in-game money, you can then use it to buy the cars you want right from the garage.

Along with purchasing new cars to fill up the 5-space garage, each car you choose will have an extensive amount of customizable parts including body kits, side skirts, front bumpers, hoods, as well as spoilers that can enhance the overall look of your ride.

The extensive amount of visual customization options available in Need for Speed ( 2015 ) definitely traces its roots back to Need for Speed Underground which has brought me back memories of being a very young teenager who had customized Japanese tuners right from a tunnel while listening to Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz in the background.

Customizing cars in Need for Speed 2015 can be a lot of fun that offers players plenty of options to build out their rides right from their purest imagination.

Once you’re satisfied with how your ride looks, you can then head out from the garage and into the nightly streets of Ventura Bay and enjoy the thrill of racing against AI racers on a head-to-head sprint race, or have some fun of out running those pesky cops that will make it incredibly easy for a classic tuner to escape without ever having to put up a fight.

After all, it’s all about owing the night.

Story Mode

Two main characters in the game, Spike ( wearing the white cap ) and Robyn ( blonde woman on the right )

Next up, in Need for Speed 2015 is the story mode or “campaign mode” in which starts off by showing a lively cinematic cut scene of the player getting involved in a street race in their black Mustang Foxbody. Following the cinematic scene of the player racing around in their Mustang Foxbody, then follows up with a scene of the player making their way into a nightclub, which then leads up to meet and greets with the main characters of the game.

After getting past all the meet and greets live cutscenes finally leads up to the player choosing their starter car in which in my case I have chosen the Subaru BRZ that I have used partially throughout the main campaign.

Along with driving my Subaru BRZ out in the streets of Ventura Bay, I have then pulled up the mini-map and searched for all the missions available that will not only be helpful to me for raking in enough money to buy upgrades, but also for buying my next car in which was very time-consuming.

After completing a number of missions, I have finally farmed up enough money that I would use for purchasing at least a few upgrades for my Subaru BRZ, and for also purchasing my next car that has helped me progress a little further through the main story and has made it easier for me to dominate a number of races.

Buying cars throughout the game is expensive, as the high-end models such as the Lamborghini and Ferrari models are worth over 100k which really made completing more events just to acquire them a lot more time-consuming.

Plus, every mission completed throughout the main story always lead up to either receiving a text from one of the characters in the game or a cinematic scene of a meet-up, which always felt awkward of being the non talking type of street racer who probably has better things to do rather than just listening to meaningless conversations that don’t involve the player.

Although completing missions though the main story was time-consuming, it was overall fun, which felt that there was always someone to race against, if you’re always up for a challenge and cops to outrun, if you don’t mind being chased around for nearly half an hour, in which has really made playing Need for Speed ( 2015 ) at least in my opinion well worth it.

Multiplayer

Last but certainly not least is Multiplayer in which brings a lot of fun to players who are interested in having some fun in showing off their custom rides to a community of players from around the world.

To be honest, I’m not much of a Multiplayer person since I prefer Singleplayer so that I can enjoy cruising around on my own without ever have to worry about running into “bad” players who are known to cause too much trouble. However, I did check out YouTube videos of players using the “Multiplayer feature” in which showed that there are two ways to share the nightly streets of Ventura Bay.

1. All-Drive

Just like with the previous installment of 2013’s Need for Speed Rivals, players can engage with one another by using the “All-Drive” feature in which converts Singleplayer into Multiplayer that will invite a lobby of players into your session. Along with sharing the road with a lobby of players, you can then have some fun engaging with them in a racing event or a head-to-head, which then can take your experience playing Need for Speed ( 2015 ) to another level.

From my experience, I have personally used the “All-Drive” feature in Need for Speed Rivals in which was a lot of fun of not only seeing players sharing the same roads I use, but also seeing players speeding away from cops which made using the “Multiplayer feature” well worth it.

2. Crew Play

Just like the “All-Drive” feature, players will show up on game session by using the “Crew Play” feature which is exactly how it sounds. Using the Crew Play feature enables you to invite up to a total of 7 players into your game session that will have you feeling like you’re part of a crew, which can then make your time playing Multiplayer in Need for Speed ( 2015 ) a lot of fun.

Along with using Crew Play, you can engage with players in events or even perhaps have a bit of fun of speeding away past cops which can make racing in the night streets of Ventura Bay twice more fun than Singleplayer.

Plus, along with a lobby filled with a total of 8 players, you can also have some fun sharing photos of the cars you and your friends use which can make using the “Multiplayer feature” in Need for Speed ( 2015 ) well worth it.

When it comes to getting the “most” out of playing Need for Speed ( 2015 ), using both All-Drive and Crew Play can enhance the way you play online that provides for the utmost fun of either racing with or against your friends.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Has extensive car customization
  • Features campaign mode
  • Free Roam is available
  • Available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Cons

  • Requires internet access
  • Not available for Next-Gen consoles

Conclusion

So, now that we have FINALLY come to the question, is Need for Speed ( 2015 ) worth the buy?

Well, the answer to that question is an absolute YES!

Why you might ask?

Well, it’s because Need for Speed ( 2015 ) offers players plenty of options to customize a wide selection of cars which includes a “story mode” that can provide for an immersive street racing experience.

Plus, if you want to take your experience playing Need for Speed ( 2015 ) to the next level, you find that using the multiplayer features of All-Drive and Crew Play can enhance the way to play, which can provide for the utmost fun of racing with players online.

Well, no matter how the way you play Need for Speed ( 2015 ) you will no doubt enjoy the time of your life of customizing and racing your collection of cool rides that will leave those annoying cops feeling jealous of seeing you out racing in the streets of Ventura Bay.

That’s about a wrap for this review, and if you have any thoughts or questions about this post or the game Need for Speed 2015, feel free to leave your comments below and I will reply.

  1. Thank you very much for this valuable detailed post about Need For Speed game. One of the games that I really enjoyed playing was Need For Speed. I used to play this a lot when I was a kid. Your post made me want to try it again. Like the second one I hit Maker. It did not require internet access. But I will try this. Keep posting like this.

    1. Hi, Dimanka!

I’m glad you enjoyed the post and I’m happy you like Need for Speed games. Need for Speed definitely brings us childhood memories, especially playing the older Need for Speed games from the late 90s to the early 2000s.

Thanks your feedback I really appreciate it! 🙂

  2. Hi Terence

I still remember when I played Need for speed, there is an option to have a T-rex instead of a car. That is so much fun. The gameplay and the quality of the game improved a lot over time.

I really liked to make more customization to my car and this game provides more options to customize. Even roaming freely in the game also makes it more enjoyable.

    Thanks
    Sujith 🙂

    1. Hi, Sujith!

The Need for Speed series has definitely been around a while and car customizations are definitely a fun feature to have in any Need for Speed game you play.

I don’t know about dinosaurs, but if you like, you can use the wrap editor feature in Need for Speed to create a dinosaur-like car. There a plenty of options to choose from and you can experiment with creating your custom wrap for your cars.

      Thanks for stopping by! 🙂
